Pioneering Poultry: A Morphometric Investigation of Seventeenth- to Early Twentieth-Century Domestic Chickens (Gallus gallus) in Eastern North America

چکیده
Chickens were among the first domesticates introduced by Europeans to North America, where they quickly became established. Morphometric analyses of chicken remains from sites in eastern Canada and Northeastern USA demonstrate that founding populations likely came several different types chicken. Comparison these data with English medieval post-medieval assemblages reveals continued selection for larger body size both resulted chickens. However, physical proportions birds remained consistent across time space until nineteenth century, when breeders began producing specialized laying, broiler, show exaggerated characteristics.

The magnetic compass of domestic chickens, Gallus gallus.
By directional training, young domestic chickens have been shown to use a magnetic compass; the same method has now been used to analyse the functional characteristics and the physical principles underlying the chickens' magnetic compass. Tests in magnetic fields with different intensities revealed a functional window around the intensity of the local geomagnetic field, with this window extendi...
متن کاملOntogenesis of Intestinal Nutrient Transport in Domestic Chickens (gallus Gallus) and Its Relation to Growth
THE FACTORS that determine growth rates among birds have provoked interest for decades. As a group, birds include the fastestgrowing vertebrates (Case 1978); yet, birds exhibit an impressive array of species-specific growth rates that vary with adult body size, degree of precociality, and ecology (Lack 1968, Ricklefs 1968, 1976, 1983). Because mortality is high in vulnerable young birds, many a...
متن کاملClinical and acquired immunologic responses to West Nile virus infection of domestic chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus).
Numerous bird species are highly susceptible to North American strains of West Nile virus (WNV), and although domestic chickens are relatively resistant to WNV-associated disease, this species currently represents the most practical avian model for immune responses to WNV infection. Knowledge of the immunomodulation of susceptibility to WNV in birds is important for understanding taxonomic diff...
متن کاملOntogenetic development of magnetic compass orientation in domestic chickens (Gallus gallus).
Domestic chickens (Gallus gallus) can be trained to search for a social stimulus in a specific magnetic direction, and cryptochrome 1a, found in the retina, has been proposed as a receptor molecule mediating magnetic directions. The present study combines immuno-histochemical and behavioural data to analyse the ontogenetic development of this ability. Newly hatched chicks already have a small a...
متن کاملExperimental oleander (Nerium oleander) intoxication in broiler chickens (Gallus gallus).
Dried leaves of oleander were orally given at a single dose of 500 mg/kg body weight to 20 clinically healthy male chickens. Clinical signs of toxicosis began to appear about 1 h after receiving the oleander and included hypersalivation, vomiting, diarrhea, deep depression, and sudden death. Also, hyperemia in the combs and wattles was obviously seen. Electrocardiograms (ECG) were repeatedly re...
